it's not about the whales

I started carrying my own grocery bags for real at least a year ago. I didn't do it to save anything but myself. I was drowning in plastic bags. I still end up with them from time to time, usually because I'm not paying attention and am too lazy to protest half way thorough the transaction. I've just been thinking about that lately. I'm not a passionate advocate for the environment, I'm a passionate advocate for my own sanity. It's funny how those 2 pursuits go hand in hand more often than not. There was a short time where recycling was banned form my life because it was terribly overwhelming, so not everything is true all of the time. My point is that what's good for me is usually good for my environment.

So I have to proclaim that I have become most excellent at "refusing" plastic bags here. It did not come easily. We were already of the mind to bring our own shopping bags to the grocery store before moving to Japan but it took me a whole lot longer than it should have to figure out how to get my point across. Seemed like no matter what combination of words I would use, the clerk would invariably have a confused look on her face, and I would end up with a plastic bag in my hand.

I was finally able to figure out how to say that I did not need their bag. Recently they even started charging for plastic bags, so now instead of saying that you don't need a bag, you have to make a special request to get one.
