a matter of politeness, manipulation, and simple respect for humanity

I am not polite to people in order to get what I want out of them, I am polite to people because as a person, I want to honor other people. This came up in conversation, and I was shocked that this was how my friend felt; that politeness was a tool for which to manipulate people.
