crisis of humanity

Yesterday I was downtown changing buses and there was an intoxicated man. At first I didn't notice, I was in a rush. He fell down and dropped his hat and knapsack. There were all sorts of people, including bus drivers, standing and looking on as this man fell to the ground. As I walked by I picked up his hat and bag and told him that he should sit for a while and regain his balance. I walked on, and he got up and jaywalked through traffic, horns honking. I don't know what to do when this happens. I handed him his things because I wanted to offer a bit of humanity to him. I want to be compassionate.
